Road bike vs. gravel bike: key differences to help you choose

Two Philosophies of Cycling

Road bikes and gravel bikes represent two different approaches to cycling. One is optimized for speed on asphalt, the other for versatility on all terrains. Here are the essential differences.

Geometry

Road bikes adopt an aggressive aerodynamic position, with a short top tube and low handlebars. Gravel bikes favor a more upright position, which is more comfortable for long distances and varied terrains.

Tires

This is the most visible difference: road bikes use narrow tires (23 to 32 mm), while gravel bikes use wide, knobby tires (35 to 50 mm) for grip on trails.

Weight

A high-end road bike weighs 6 to 8 kg. An equivalent gravel bike weighs 8 to 11 kg. This difference influences the choice of wall mount: the Compact Bike Setup and the Design Bike Setup are sized for both.

Use

  • Road: asphalt rides, gran fondos, races, mountain passes.
  • Gravel: trails, bikepacking, adventure, road/trail versatility.

And storage?

Whatever your choice, a brushed stainless steel wall mount is suitable for both. The only difference: allow a little more lateral space for the wide tires of a gravel bike.
