Gravel and road bikes: two geometries, two storage constraints
Outwardly, gravel and road bikes look similar: same 700c wheel diameter, same general silhouette. But a closer look reveals that their structural differences have a direct impact on the choice of wall mount. If you own both types of bikes, or if you are hesitating between the two, here's what you need to know.
Tire width: the most visible difference
A road bike typically uses 23 to 28 mm tires. A gravel bike, on the other hand, wears between 35 and 50 mm, sometimes more. This difference directly impacts wheel hook type mounts: a hook sized for a 25 mm road tire will often be too narrow for a 40 mm gravel tire. Always check tire compatibility before purchasing a mount.
Handlebar width: the advantage of gravel... and its disadvantage
Road handlebars are generally 38 to 42 cm. Flared gravel handlebars often exceed 44 to 48 cm. In practice, this means that gravel bikes require more lateral space on the wall. If you store several bikes side-by-side, plan for greater spacing between each mount.
Bike weight: gravel is heavier
A competition road bike can weigh less than 7 kg. A reference gravel bike is more likely to be between 8 and 11 kg, sometimes more with accessories. This weight difference must be taken into account in the permissible load of the mount. A mount designed for 15 kg will be sufficient for a road bike, but limited for a loaded gravel bike.
Fork and frame: different geometries
Gravel bikes generally have wider forks to accommodate wide tires and sometimes fork bags. This geometry can pose a problem on mounts that specifically hook the fork or head tube. Wheel or frame mounts are more universal and adapt better to both types of bikes.
