Getting back on your bike in spring: the complete checklist

Introduction

Spring is here, the good weather is back, and the urge to ride is undeniable. But before you take your bike off its wall mount and hit the roads, a few checks are essential. Here is the complete pre-season checklist.

Mechanical Inspection

The Chain

Check the wear with a gauge. If it exceeds 0.75%, replace it before it wears out the cassette.

The Brakes

Check the pad thickness, cable tension (or fluid level for hydraulic disc brakes), and caliper centering.

The Tires

Inspect the sidewalls and tread for cuts or excessive wear. Inflate to the recommended pressure.

The Wheels

Check the centering and spoke tension. A buckled wheel must be corrected before riding.

The Drivetrain

Clean and lubricate the chain, derailleur, and cassette. Check the derailleur adjustments.

Frame Inspection

Carefully inspect the frame for any cracks or impacts. Pay particular attention to stress areas: chainstays, dropouts, seat tube.

Accessory Check

  • Charged GPS computer battery
  • Functional lighting
  • Complete repair kit
  • Helmet in good condition (no impact since last season)

Physical Resumption

After several weeks without riding, resume gradually. Spend the first 2 weeks in zone 1-2, without seeking performance. Your body needs to readjust.

Conclusion

A well-prepared return to cycling means no unpleasant surprises. Your bike is waiting for you on its David & Clément mount — ready for a new season.
