Home Bike Maintenance Tips Every UK Cyclist Should Know

Keep Your Bike in Top Condition Year-Round

The UK climate — with its rain, mud and road salt in winter — is particularly tough on bicycles. A basic maintenance routine carried out at home will extend your bike's life significantly and keep your rides safe and enjoyable.

Monthly Checks

1. Clean & Lubricate the Chain

A dry or dirty chain accelerates wear on your cassette and chainrings. Use a degreaser, rinse thoroughly, dry, then apply a wet lube for UK conditions. Aim to do this every 200–300 km or after every wet ride.

2. Check Tyre Pressure & Condition

Under-inflated tyres increase rolling resistance and the risk of punctures. Check pressure weekly with a track pump. Inspect the tread for cuts, embedded glass or excessive wear.

3. Inspect Brake Pads

Rim brake pads wear faster in wet conditions. Check the wear indicator grooves — replace pads when they're worn smooth. For disc brakes, check rotor thickness and pad depth.

4. Check Cables & Housing

Frayed or corroded cables can cause brake or gear failure. Replace if you notice stiffness, fraying, or rust.

Seasonal Deep Clean

At the end of winter, give your bike a thorough deep clean: remove the wheels, degrease the drivetrain, and check the headset and bottom bracket for play. Re-grease all bearing surfaces.

Smart Storage = Less Maintenance

Storing your bike on a wall-mounted rack — off the floor, away from moisture — is the single best thing you can do to slow corrosion. Our brushed stainless steel racks are themselves corrosion-resistant, making them ideal for UK garages and utility rooms.
