Introduction
Your bar tape is the only point of contact between your hands and your bike. Worn bar tape degrades comfort, grip, and the aesthetics of your bike. Fortunately, changing it is one of the simplest and most rewarding maintenance operations.
When to change your bar tape?
- When it's dirty and can no longer be cleaned
- When it's torn or crushed
- When it has lost its elasticity and cushioning
- Generally every 6-12 months depending on use
- When you want to change the aesthetic of your bike
Choosing your bar tape
Materials
- Cork: excellent cushioning, premium look, but fragile
- EVA foam: lightweight, good grip, less durable
- Silicone: very durable, good grip, less comfortable
- Leather: premium, durable, requires maintenance
Thickness
The thicker the bar tape, the more comfortable it is. For long distances, opt for 3-4 mm. For pure performance, 2-2.5 mm.
How to change your bar tape
- Unwrap the old bar tape starting from the center of the handlebar
- Clean the handlebar
- Place the lever shims if necessary
- Start wrapping from the end of the handlebar, overlapping by a third
- Move up towards the center maintaining even tension
- Finish with the provided adhesive tape
- Insert the end plugs
Conclusion
Changing your bar tape is like giving your bike a new lease on life for less than €20. A simple gesture that changes everything — like installing a David & Clément wall mount.
