Cyclosportive: How to prepare for your first

Introduction

Participating in your first sportive is a motivating goal that structures your training and gives meaning to every ride. Whether it's the Marmotte, the Granfondo Strade Bianche, or a local event, here's how to prepare effectively.

Choosing your first sportive

  • Distance: start with an event of 80-120 km
  • Elevation gain: less than 2000 m for a first event
  • Timeframe: allow at least 3-4 months for preparation

The preparation plan

Phase 1: Base (8 weeks)

Building volume in Zone 2. Objective: ride for 3 hours without difficulty.

Phase 2: Development (6 weeks)

Introduction of specific work: climbs, intervals, progressive long rides.

Phase 3: Specific (4 weeks)

Simulating the event: similar course, refueling, effort management.

Phase 4: Tapering (2 weeks)

Reducing volume, maintaining intensity. Rest 2-3 days before the event.

Logistics on event day

  • Arrive 1 hour before the start
  • Eat your usual breakfast 3 hours before
  • Check your bike the day before (tire pressure, mechanics, lights)
  • Start cautiously: don't get carried away by the momentum of the peloton

Effort management

The first hour should feel too easy. That's normal. Conserve energy for the second half of the event.

Conclusion

Finishing your first sportive is an incomparable feeling. And when you get back, your bike will be waiting for you on its David & Clément stand — proud to have carried you.
