How to easily install a bike rack at home

Installing a wall-mounted bike rack: instructions

Have you just purchased a wall-mounted bike rack and want to install it yourself? Good news: installing a bike rack is a simple task that anyone can do. Follow our step-by-step guide to secure your bike rack safely.

What you need before installing your bike rack

Before you begin installing your bike rack, prepare the following materials:

  • Your bike rack and the included hardware
  • A drill
  • A spirit level
  • A pencil
  • A stud or metal detector (recommended)

The quality of your bike rack installation depends largely on preparation. Do not overlook this step before attaching your bike rack.

Step 1: choose the location for your bike rack

Choosing the right location is crucial for installing your bike rack. For a wall-mounted bike rack, opt for:

  • A load-bearing wall or a sturdy stud to attach your bike rack
  • An appropriate height: the bike rack should allow you to take the bike off and put it back on easily
  • Sufficient space around the bike rack to maneuver with the bike

Step 2: mark the fixing points for the bike rack

Position your bike rack against the wall at the chosen location. Using the spirit level, make sure your bike rack is level. Mark the locations of the bike rack screws with a pencil. A misaligned bike rack can make your bike hang crookedly.

Step 3: drill the holes for the bike rack

Drill the holes at the marked locations. Use a drill bit suitable for the type of wall. For a bike rack attached to concrete or brick, use a masonry drill bit. For a bike rack attached to drywall, use the specific anchors provided or ones adapted to the weight of your bike.

Step 4: attach the bike rack

Insert the anchors into the holes, then screw your bike rack in firmly. Check that your bike rack does not move and is level. A properly attached bike rack should be perfectly rigid: if your bike rack wobbles, tighten the screws or use more suitable anchors.

Step 5: hang the bike on the bike rack

Once your bike rack is securely attached, all that’s left is to hang your bike. Depending on the model of bike rack you chose, the bike is mounted by the frame, the front wheel, or the rear wheel. Our David & Clément bike rack is designed to make this operation intuitive and fast.
